Dr. Nello Spiteri is a highly experienced STM publishing executive with over 35 years experience, offering strategic, publishing, financial, innovation and people management skills with an outstanding track record in the STM publishing industry.
After obtaining a BA in Biology at the University of York and a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Durham (England), Dr. Spiteri then spent three and a half years as a Visiting Fellow at the Biology Centre, State University of Groningen in The Netherlands. He joined Elsevier in 1982 developing various journal and book publishing programs particularly in the Neurosciences, for Undergraduates, Postgraduates and Researchers. This included developing some of the first e- learning tools (OPAL – Open Programs for Associative Learning), and the first multimedia encyclopedia for the Neurosciences, when web and multimedia technologies were still in their nascent phase. He was able to lead teams, across geographical locations, to new levels of success, pioneering new (electronic) products and services. This led to him becoming Publishing Director first for the Brain Sciences Division in 1997 and then for the Health Sciences International Division in 2000, during which he developed additional publishing programs and managing a portfolio of over 100 international Health Science journals and publishing around 30 new book titles per year.
In 2008, Nello was appointed as Director for Innovation & Business Development for Elsevier’s Health Science Division. During this time, he was responsible for developing and implementing the Health Sciences strategy for innovation as well as expanding the journals publishing business to the Middle East and GCC regions. After leaving Elsevier in December 2010, Nello founded his own consultancies in STM Publishing (www.melitapublishingconsultants.com) and Business Innovation (www.brightsparksinnovation.com).
Public speaker
Nello is an outstanding public speaker. He has held numerous publishing and innovation workshops, seminars and presentations internationally. He has also consulted for various STM Publishers, including Nature, Springer, IOS Press, Pleiades Press and Elsevier, as well as corporations, universities and scholarly societies.
